BIM is becoming more widely adopted on construction and
engineering projects as companies realize the benefits of
implementing this process. BIM uses intelligent 3D models which are
maintained throughout the asset lifecycle with the potential to
deliver significant efficiencies and cost-savings.
Collaboration between engineering teams is encouraged but
frequently the sharing of information can be difficult with
information held in different formats, across systems used by
different teams. The challenge faced by owner operators and EPCs is
that in the case of Revit models used for BIM, these are often held
outside of their engineering document management system (EDMS) and
therefore, uncontrolled and not subject to formal version control
and auditing. It can be difficult to maintain a central
up-to-date Revit model when there is no process in place for
controlled review and approval. As a result, companies are looking
to integrate their EDMS and BIM solutions to bridge this gap.
Bringing existing tools together and making current processes
work more efficiently is a recurring theme when looking at driving
cost-savings. Often the tools and processes are already in place,
teams simply need to integrate more effectively to maximize
capabilities. McLaren Software has developed an integration between
Autodesk Revit and EDMS to provide a secure, collaborative
environment for connecting models, teams and project data - as well
as enabling concurrent editing of models. The integration supports
2D and 3D cuts of the model so that these can be quickly and easily
attached to internal and external review and approval workflows,
enabling cross-discipline reviews, comment consolidation and
management - all directly from the EDMS ribbon on the Revit
interface. For those without access to Revit, integration of
the sheetset capability into the EDMS means that they can still
interact with the process.
Put simply, the Revit model is maintained as the single source
of truth. A full history of communication, status and progress for
the full documentation set for project handover is provided, with
assets linked to documentation for Operations and Maintenance.
From build, through handover, operation and maintenance, BIM
promotes information reuse at every stage of the asset
